Recent decades have been a period of transformation and growth for Zain, as a result of the acquisition of operations and operating licenses in the Middle East and Africa. The expansion created positive impacts within the company as it brought forth diverse and innovative experiences as well as a vast range of additional knowledge and technical expertise, positioning Zain as a leading regional and pioneering telecom operator.<\/p>

Previously known as Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC), and rebranded to Zain in 2007, the company was able to steadily transform from a public sector monopoly operating at a national level, to a private sector leader with a regional footprint. In the early 2000s, the region experienced economic growth and stability and unemployment rates quite low across the board as women also started to join the labor market and the entrepreneurship ecosystem was starting to evolve. During this time Zain took advantage of this projected growth and maintained its commitment to regional expansion.<\/p>

In the span of just two years, the company purchased Fastlink in Jordan in 2002, MTC-Vodafone Bahrain launched commercial services in 2003, and Atheer Telecom, MTC\u2019s Iraq operation, was awarded a license to operate in Southern Iraq in late 2003 launching commercial services soon thereafter. Through the start of this expansion and in line with the company\u2019s social contract, Zain maintained its promise to continue its contribution to the communities it operates in, as demonstrated through its pursuit of developing the Kuwaiti labor market, initiating community led initiatives in Bahrain, funding medical treatment centers in Kuwait, providing a mobile pediatric clinic in Jordan and supporting vulnerable communities in Iraq.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This period was exceptional as it showcases the company\u2019s growth, strong market presence, and forward-thinking approach to its vision for the overall development of the region. Embedded in the company\u2019s DNA, Zain aimed to provide its stakeholders the best quality networks\/services, and systems, while leveraging its associations with partners to implement the latest network technology.<\/p>

It is important to consider that the industry was undergoing rapid development and widespread adoption which highlighted its influence on a country\u2019s socio-economic progress. On a macroeconomic level, increased broadband deployment resulted in higher economic growth and productivity in addition to creating new jobs. However, it is important to distinguish between the availability of network infrastructure and deployment and the actual utilization by people. Studies have shown that skilled workers leveraged such technological advancements where productivity was increased as opposed to lower skilled workers. During this time period as the company was scaling its products, services and market reach it was also assessing the nature of each market it was entering as this assessment shapes both the company\u2019s trajectory and overall impact.<\/p>

The rapid growth of the company came with various challenges, where in-depth analysis and understanding of the markets was crucial. It was important for Zain to identify the various challenges in each market and ensure it dedicated adequate resources to resolving them.<\/p>

Over the span of seven years, Zain strategically expanded its market presence from four markets in the Middle East to a total of 22 markets in the Middle East and Africa. The rapid expansion demonstrated the company's commitment to growth and its ability to seize opportunities in emerging markets. During this period, Zain leveraged its experience and expertise to adapt to new market dynamics. One of the biggest challenges faced was funding network expansions required in countries such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Ghana and Nigeria.<\/p>

In 2003, Zain rebranded as MTC-Vodafone, reflecting the partnership between the two entities. MTC offered Vodafone and its partners access to international services in Kuwait, whilst Vodafone provided the Kuwaiti market access to its existing services and innovative service pipeline. By leveraging this partnership, Zain was able to acquire Fastlink, the leading operator in Jordan and acquire the second GSM licenses in Bahrain and Iraq. \u00a0<\/p>

Although Zain was expanding, it wanted to ensure it protected and consolidated its customer base in Kuwait. The company invested over US$41 million in its local network through various partnerships, enabling the introduction of richer applications, better customer care, and an improvement in network capacity and quality.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

In 2004, the company marked signing up its one millionth customer in Kuwait. During that year, Zain successfully introduced data, MMS, and GPRS services; maintained 71% market share in Jordan; grew the number of customers in Bahrain by 100,000; employed 100% Iraqi nationals to strengthen bonds between the company and the community; and added MTC Lebanon (now branded 'touch') to its list of operations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

In 2005, Zain saw its ambitious growth strategy come to fruition. It highlighted the start of the vision to evolve from being a single operator based in Kuwait in 2002; growing to four markets in 2003; five markets in 2004; and to a company operating in 19 countries in the Middle East and Africa by \u00a02005. This strategy was exemplified through the company's landmark acquisition of the African operator Celtel and its 13 operating licenses across the Africa. This was then followed by the acquisition of a majority stake in Madagascar\u2019s Madacom, and the increase of MTC\u2019s stake in Mobitel Sudan from 39% to 100% in early 2006 as well as acquiring 65% of VMobile in Nigeria.<\/p>

Through this expansion, the company remained centered on its beliefs and values. It continued to strive to better understand the dynamics in every community by catering to different needs. MTC, as Zain was known at the time, continued to promote transparency for employees to provide them the space to be able to express themselves freely, especially as they came from diverse backgrounds. Another area of focus for the company was education and youth, which the company believes is the source of its current and future success.<\/p>

Following the 3x3x3 strategy, in 2007 the company won the bid for the third GSM license in Saudi Arabia, securing a 25-year long license. To comply with Saudi Arabia's legal regulations, the company initiated an IPO on the Kingdom's stock market, resulting in a reduction of its stake to 25% while maintaining management control (currently Zain Group\u2019s stake is 37%).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

When all the group\u2019s operations were collected and unified in the Middle East and North Africa region, the company adopted a new logo and brand under the name \u201cZain. The aim of the unification of the brand, is to build a unique name that attracts customers, shareholders, and investors to its world, Zain relied on launching its brand through various advertising campaigns that promote the idea of \u200b\u200bcoexistence in a \u201cA Wonderful World\u201d.<\/p>

In September 2007, MTC Group rebranded to the single Zain brand. As an operator in 22 countries across the Middle East and Africa, MTC Group also rebranded five of its operations - in Kuwait, Bahrain (both formerly MTC-Vodafone), Jordan (formerly Fastlink), Sudan (formerly Mobitel) as well as Iraq (formerly MTC-Atheer). The name Zain was selected by employees in coordination with international advertising agencies who created the brand\u2019s look and feel. The new logo and its colorful identity reflected the Group\u2019s sense of freshness and boldness with its brand signature of \u201cA Wonderful World\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
