Introduction

Meeting the challenges resulting from climate change is considered a key driver of global economic change. We continue to witness the severity and impact of the world warming and urgent action is required to save our planet. Innovative advancements and scientific research have been conducted to understand and measure our impacts and identify how we might mitigate the implications of climate change.

Livelihoods and biodiversity are being severely affected by the impact of climate change from species and ecosystem perspectives. Rising sea-levels, increased flooding, and temperature changes continue to diminish and impact natural resources. If the rate of such changes continues to accelerate, the needs of humanity will not be met in a sustainable, equitable and inclusive manner, placing our very existence at risk. The Planetary Boundaries, a concept introduced in 2009, aims to define environmental thresholds in which humanity can safely thrive. By adopting this framework, decision makers should be able to assess areas of risk and make choices that are beneficial to societal development.
